10 Questions to Ask Before Choosing a PET Preform Manufacturer

Most businesses lose lakhs of rupees not because they ordered the wrong product — but because they asked the wrong questions before ordering. Choosing a PET preform manufacturer in India sounds simple. You choose a supplier, get pricing details, and confirm the order.

But the moment your bottles start leaking, cracking, or getting rejected on the filling line — that’s when you realize the real cost of a wrong decision. India has hundreds of PET preform suppliers. Some are genuine manufacturers. Many are traders. A few cut corners on resin quality. And almost none will tell you this upfront unless you ask.

But before placing another bulk order, we explain in this blog 10 questions that every wise buyer should ask himself – and not only because of pricing.

1. Are You a Direct Manufacturer or a Trader?

This is the single most important question — and most buyers skip it entirely.

The truth is, there are a lot of suppliers, which are not manufacturers on IndiaMART and TradeIndia. They are middlemen who purchase preforms from genuine factories and resell them at a higher price. That translates to higher prices, no quality control and no accountability when things go wrong.

Direct manufacturers have machines, manage the process, and can solve problems in the first place. The trader is able to place calls only.

Always ask: “May I go to your factory?” If they hesitate or give vague answers — you already have your answer.

2. What Grade of PET Resin Do You Use — Virgin or Recycled?

The resin you use is what makes the difference between a good or poor performance — clarity, strength, shelf life and safety.

Virgin PET Resin is a new PET resin that is produced from petrochemical feedstocks. It gives you crystal-clear performances with consistent performance. Recycled PET (rPET) is a less expensive option but the quality of the rPET will vary greatly, depending upon the way the PET is processed.

A few suppliers use recycled resin in production but do not tell their customers. The result? Yellowish performs poorly on bottle walls and increases rejection rates on your blowing line.

Be sure to ask the resin grade and brand they use. If the manufacturer is reliable, they’ll tell you right away, without any hesitation.

3. Are Your Preforms Food-Grade, BPA-Free & FSSAI Compliant?

If your product goes inside the bottle — water, juice, oil, honey, medicine — this question is non-negotiable.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has very strict guidelines on the usage of plastics that come into direct contact with food products. FSSAI has issued revised guidelines with respect to PET material for food packaging purposes as per May 2025. Your product and your brand are at legal risk if your supplier can’t demonstrate compliance with FSSAI.

Also, “BPA free” is essential. BPA is a chemical used in poor quality plastics that may leach into food or beverages. You should always request documentation; never rely on verbal guarantees alone.

4. What Neck Sizes and Gram Weights Do You Offer?

This question can save you from one of the most expensive mistakes in packaging — ordering the wrong neck size.

Different products need different neck finishes. PCO 1881 short neck is standard for mineral water. Alaska neck works well for edible oils. CTC 29/21 is used for liquor bottles. If you order the wrong neck size, your caps won’t fit, your capping machine won’t work, and you’ll face costly downtime.

Gram weight matters too. A heavier performance means a stronger bottle but higher cost. Ask your manufacturer for a complete range and request a dimensional tolerance report before finalizing.

5. Can You Send Physical Samples Before a Bulk Order?

Never — and we mean never — place a bulk order without testing physical samples first.

A sample lets you check clarity, weight accuracy, neck finish precision, and how well the preform performs on your blow molding machine. Many buyers skip this step to save time and end up with an entire rejected batch worth lakhs of rupees.

A genuine manufacturer will always offer samples without hesitation. In fact, they will encourage it — because they are confident in their quality. Never trust a supplier who asks for a big order before showing samples.

6. What Is Your Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ)?

MOQ can make or break a deal — especially for small businesses and startups.

Some large manufacturers have MOQs of 50,000 to 100,000 pieces minimum. That is fine if you are a big beverage brand. But if you are a growing FMCG startup or a regional brand, you need a supplier who is flexible enough to support smaller initial orders.

Also ask whether MOQ changes with customization. The use of custom colors, unique neck sizes, or particular gram weight may mean increased MOQs. Knowing this before is very important because you will not be taken by surprise when placing your order.

7. How Do You Ensure Batch-to-Batch Consistency?

Here is one problem that silently kills business organizations — you make an excellent first order, but your second order has subtle differences regarding dimensions, weight, or colors.

Research shows that inconsistent performance quality causes 7–8% rejection rates on blow molding lines. That translates to thousands of wasted preforms, production downtime costing ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 per hour, and frustrated clients.

Ask your supplier what systems they use to maintain consistency. Do they use computerized temperature monitoring? Do they provide batch reports with every order? Do they conduct in-house lab testing? These are not luxury questions — they are basic quality expectations.

8. How Do You Handle Quality Issues or Production Challenges?

All manufacturers – regardless of skill – will encounter quality problems sooner or later. The difference between a great manufacturer and a poor one does not lie in whether such incidents occur; it is how quickly and transparently they deal with the situation.

Here is the question to ask them outright: “What would you do if I received a bad batch?” A reputable company will go through their entire process of replacing, investigating, and correcting the problem without hesitation.

If the supplier gets uncomfortable with this question or gives vague answers like “don’t worry, it won’t happen” — that tells you everything you need to know about how they will treat you after the money is paid.

9. How Does Pricing Structure Work?

Price is important — but understanding how price is structured is even more important.

Buyers often focus only on per-piece pricing, ignoring hidden costs like freight, tooling, and later price increases. Some suppliers also adjust pricing based on global PET resin costs — and if you are not aware of this, sudden price increases can catch you off guard.

Ask specifically: Does price change with volume? Are freight charges included? Will pricing stay fixed for a contract period? Transparent answers here build trust. Vague or evasive answers are a warning sign.

10. Who Handles Communication After the Order Is Placed?

This is the one question that almost no one asks – but ends up regretting not doing so.

You order the item, pay the advance, and then the very same person becomes out of reach! You get passed around between departments. Nobody takes ownership of your delivery status or quality concern.

Before placing an order, ask: “Who will I contact after the order is confirmed?“ An honest manufacturer who appreciates business relations will give you his or her name and telephone number. That level of accountability is what separates a genuine business partner from just another vendor.
